Barbeque at Lion Park

On the last day of 2011 the students and teachers from the youth centre spent a day at Lion Park and had a delicious barbeque. The aim of this activity was not only to have a good time, but also to allow the students to practise their independent living skills and to encourage the spirit of team work.

The students and teachers were picked up and transported to the venue by eight taxis from the Bei Fang Taxi Company. The students all looked very attractive wearing their school uniforms. Everyone huddled around the barbeques to keep warm on the chilly winter’s day. The students worked together to prepare a tasty meal, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all. It was a wonderful way to see out 2011.

Visit to Guangxi University

In December 26^th, the teachers and students from the Youth Development Centre along with staff members and volunteers from Rainbow Missions Hong Kong visited Guangxi University. The aim of the visit was to raise awareness of cerebral palsy , and to give season’s greetings to the university students.

We split into two groups and found two busy locations on campus to distribute greeting cards and brochures to passers-by. We encouraged the students to pass the materials on to their friends and family. Some university students even approached us themselves; they were interested in our organisation and our activities. Some took photos with our students, and encouraged them to live confidently and bravely.

After the event, our students shared their thoughts and feelings. “At first we were too nervous to even say hi to the university students here”, said one, “but with encouragement and support from our teachers, we became gained confidence and were more proactive”. They also expressed their desire to go out into society more often; they recognised it helped improve their confidence will grow.

The Students of the Youth Development Centre Attend a Christmas Party.

On the evening of December 23^rd, the Youth Development Centre took part in a Christmas party held by the Christian Church at the Jin-Tone Hotel.

Our students performed a sign-language show: “Best Wishes in Life”, and our teachers performed a Mongolian dance called “Blessed Threshing Floor”. Our teachers and students had all worked very hard and sacrificed much of their leisure time to rehearse. They put on a great show!

Our students made an impact with their bright Christmas clothes (with matching hats) and the beautiful Mongolian costumes worn by our teachers really stood out. The audience was deeply moved, many watched with tears in their eyes. We would like to thank all the volunteers from Guangxi University of Finance and Economics for their generous help and support during this event.

Crazy Car Stunts for Charity!

On the first weekend of December, as the weather had just turned cold, we participated in “Crazy Car Stunts for Charity” at the 4^th Annual China-ASEAN Auto Expo. The event was put on by Today Convenience Stores, SCC Racecar Club, China Car Stunt Club, Guangxi Lexus, GE Wine Bar, Guangxi Car Stunt Club, Pirelli Tyres and The L&C Leather Workshop. The organisers had the innovative idea to use a car stunt show to raise money, support and awareness for Angel House.

The organisers invited our students from the Youth Centre to come and watch the show, and meet some of the participants. Our students charmed the crowds with their intelligence and wit, and they had a great time! Our teachers explained the work of Angel House and answered some common questions about cerebral palsy.

People responded well to the call for donations over both days of the event, and an impressive total of 68, 662 RMB was raised .

Christmas Cheer!

It’s almost Christmas time, and the US consulate in Guangzhou will be spreading Christmas joy from Angel House. The US consulate has invited our children to show off their excellent drawing skills in a competition. The best pictures will be turned into the US consulate’s official Christmas greeting cards and will be sent around the world. All the pictures will be displayed at an exhibition and Christmas party in Nanning. Many thanks to the US consulate for bringing the fun and excitement of the festive season to Angel House.

Masterchef at the Youth Centre!

On the 30^th of September the Youth Centre held an exciting cooking competition. The aim of this activity was to give the students an opportunity to practice their independent living skills. At the same time, the students practised working together as part of a team.

Students had to prepare their dish from scratch, including washing, chopping and frying the vegetables. If at any point in the process there was something they were unable to do themselves, they were allowed to enlist help from a teacher. The dishes were taste-tested by an expert panel of teachers and family members. The dishes were judged according to creativity, healthiness and of course, how delicious they were! All participants were presented with a certificate of merit and everyone enjoyed a fun afternoon, and a tasty meal!
